Background of the study
Ritualistic killings in Ilesa West Local Government Area have posed unique forensic challenges due to the clandestine nature of these crimes and the deliberate destruction of evidence. Forensic anthropology offers critical tools—such as trauma pattern analysis, osteological profiling, and contextual reconstruction—that can help unravel the circumstances behind such killings (Afolabi, 2023). Recent innovations, including 3D imaging and isotopic analysis, have improved the capacity to interpret skeletal evidence even when perpetrators attempt to obscure traces (Balogun, 2024). Despite these advancements, the application of forensic anthropology in ritualistic cases remains underutilized due to cultural taboos, limited forensic resources, and insufficient inter-agency collaboration (Daramola, 2025). This study investigates the specific impact of forensic anthropology on solving ritualistic killings, examining both methodological strengths and the socio-cultural barriers that restrict its effectiveness. By integrating field case studies, laboratory data, and interviews with forensic experts, the research intends to propose a strategic framework for enhancing investigative outcomes in cases characterized by ritualistic violence.

Statement of the problem
Ritualistic killings in Ilesa West continue to elude effective investigation due to limited forensic resources, cultural sensitivities, and deliberate evidence tampering (Afolabi, 2023; Balogun, 2024). These challenges hamper the application of forensic anthropology and delay the identification of victims and perpetrators (Daramola, 2025). Consequently, many cases remain unresolved, undermining public trust in law enforcement. This study aims to address these issues by critically evaluating current forensic practices and identifying strategies to overcome cultural and operational barriers in ritualistic killing cases.

Objectives of the study:

  • To evaluate forensic methods used in investigating ritualistic killings.

  • To identify challenges affecting the application of these methods.

  • To propose strategic improvements to enhance case resolution.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are applied in ritualistic killing investigations?

  • What cultural and operational challenges impact forensic analyses?

  • How can forensic methodologies be improved to solve such cases more effectively?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced imaging techniques enhance the detection of trauma patterns.

  • H2: Cultural barriers negatively affect the collection of forensic evidence.

  • H3: Improved inter-agency coordination will lead to higher case resolution rates.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the complex challenges of investigating ritualistic killings. By refining forensic approaches and overcoming cultural obstacles, the research aims to improve victim identification and criminal prosecution. The outcomes will support legal reforms, foster inter-agency collaboration, and ultimately enhance public trust in forensic investigations and the justice system in Ilesa West.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Ritualistic Killings: Homicides conducted as part of ritual practices.

  • Trauma Pattern Analysis: The study of bone injuries to infer cause and manner of death.

  • Forensic Imaging: The use of advanced imaging technologies in forensic investigations.
